Dec. 13, 2013
Jacksonville, Ill. – After not playing a game in nine days, the SMWC basketball team showed little signs of rust as they came out victorious with a 90-78 win over Greenville College on Friday night. SMWC played in its first of two games at the MacMurray Classic.
The Pomeroys were led by Ja’Breena Gardner who had 18 points on the night and shot 6-of-13 from the field. Madeline Pea (12 pts.) and Hailee Rittinger (10 pts.) also scored in double figures for SMWC. Na-Shaunda Rayford also dished out a game-high 6 assists.
Emily Grudy for Greenville College led all scorers with a game-high 20 points. Jamie Schollenbruch (11 pts.) and Miranda Murray (10 pts.) were also able to register double figures for the Lady Panthers.
In the first half, Greenville would open with the first basket of the game and led 10-9 at the 18:13 mark. However, the Pomeroys would take the lead a minute later with a Mikayla Kinneer jump shot and never trailed for the rest of the half. The Pomeroys would build their lead up to 18 points in the first stanza before the Lady Panthers cut the lead down to seven by halftime. SMWC led at intermission 49-42.
The Pomeroys would be able to extend their lead back to double-digits in the second half, leading by as many as 18 points again at the 16:54 mark. But the Lady Panthers would not go down without a fight. With 5:40 left in the game, Greenville would cut the Pomeroy lead down to two points off a jump shot by Schollenbruch. With four minutes to go and SMWC leading by three, the Pomeroys would go on a key 8-0 run to end the game.
The Pomeroys are now 5-4 on the season and will play again tomorrow (Saturday) against the hosts of MacMurray College. Game time is set for a 3 p.m. start.
