Pomeroys drop season opener to Harris-Stowe State, 98-86

The Pomeroy basketball team opened up the 2012-2013 season as they traveled to St. Louis, Mo. on Friday night to take on the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State University. The Pomeroys were unable to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit, falling to the Hornets 98-86. 

Brittney Shaner led the Pomeroys, scoring 23 points. SMWC also had two other players in double figures as Chelsea Weaver finished with 12 points and Sierra Lopez tallied 10 points.

In the first half, the Pomeroys were hot from beyond the arc, hitting nine three-point attempts. In the second half, the Pomeroys were able get more chances at the basket, outscoring the Hornets 46-42 and putting up 18 more field goal attempts.   

Shanique Buford of Harris-Stowe State led all scorers with 33 points and 22 rebounds.   

The Pomeroys record falls to 0-1 on the young season and will travel to Danville, Ill. to take on Danville Community College on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
