Pomeroys drop first game of the season

Clinton, Ind. – The SMWC basketball team lost their first game of the season on Tuesday night, falling to the visitors of Harris-Stowe State University, 104-67.

The Pomeroys kept the game close in the first ten minutes of the game before the Hornets would start to pull away.  Harris-Stowe State led at the half 54-36.

The second half didn’t get much better for the Pomeroys as they were held to just 31 second half points.  The Hornets would continue to get balanced scoring from Shanique Buford (26 pts.), KeAris Vaughn (24 pts.), Mariah Fleming (20 pts.), and Shakaunna Futrell (18 pts.) who all scored in double digits for the visitors.

The Pomeroys were led by senior Madeline Pea who recorded a team-high 13 points on the night.  The only other Pomeroy in double-digits was freshman Ja’Breena Gardner who finished with 12 points and a team-high 8 rebounds and 7 steals. 

The Pomeroy record is now even at 1-1.  They will return to action on Nov. 16 when they travel to New Albany, Ind. with a matchup against Indiana University-Southeast.  It will be the first road test of the season for SMWC.  Game time is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
