Pomeroys fall to No. 1 ranked Lindenwood-Belleville

Belleville, Ill. – Three Pomeroy players had season-best performances on Saturday afternoon, but the SMWC basketball team was unable to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit and fell to USCAA No. 1 ranked Lindenwood-Belleville 120-95.
From the start of the game, the No. 1 ranked team in Division I of the USCAA was able to take advantage of the Pomeroys early. The Lady Lynx led 8-0 within the first two minutes of the first half. They were able to go on another 8-0 run minutes later, giving the home team a 14 point lead at the 15:28 mark of the half. The hosts would extend their lead to as many as 25 points with the Pomeroys getting as close as 16 points with 8 minutes left. At the half, Lindenwood-Belleville held a comfortable lead at 64-40.
In the second half, the Pomeroys would put on a better shooting display, being outscored for the half by only one point (56-55). SMWC was not able to cut into the lead very much in the final half of the game, but did shoot well from the field. The Pomeroys shot 53% (21-of-39) and were 6-of-13 (46%) from three-point range.
For the game, Lindenwood-Belleville shot 52% (50-of-95) from the field, 46% (14-of-30) from three-point range, and shot 66% (6-of-9) from the foul line. SMWC shot 42% (34-of-80) from the field, 38% (12-of-31) from three-point range, and 57% (15-of-26) from the charity stripe. The Lady Lynx also won the battle of the boards (53-45).
Sierra Lopez had her best scoring and rebounding game of the season for the Pomeroys. She secured her second straight double-double by scoring a season-best 18 points and game-high 14 rebounds. Mikayla Kinneer and Madeline Pea also had season-best performances on Saturday. Kinneer and Pea both scored 16 points on the afternoon with Pea having her best rebounding game of the season with nine total boards. Ja’Breena Gardner (18 pts.) and Na-Shaunda Rayford (16 pts.) also had strong performances for the Pomeroys.
Lindenwood-Belleville was led by Shelby Kohrman who scored a game-high 29 points. Four other players scored in double figures for the Lady Lynx with 20-point efforts by Diamond Burt (24 pts.) and Breana McCullough (20 pts.)
With the loss, the Pomeroys are now 6-10 on the season. The Lady Lynx improve to 13-7. The Pomeroys will look to get back in the win column with their next game on Thursday, Jan. 16. They will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio with a matchup against USCAA opponent UC-Clermont. Game time is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
