Pomeroys struggle in home loss to Franklin College, 122-68

Nov. 29, 2012

Whitney Allen’s team-high 19 points weren’t enough as the Pomeroy basketball team dropped their sixth consecutive game in a 122-68 home loss to Franklin College on Wednesday night.

In the first half, the Pomeroys were able to use their defensive pressure in forcing 16 Grizzly turnovers. However, Franklin was able to use their size to their advantage and doubled the Pomeroys in total rebounds 47-23. Allen connected on three attempts for three-point shots and led SMWC at the half with 13 points. At intermission, Franklin led comfortably, 63-34.

Coming out of halftime, the Pomeroys attempted to continue their defensive pressure in hopes of mounting a comeback against a strong Grizzly side, yet points off turnovers and fast break baskets came often for the Grizzlies and they were able to dictate much of the scoring in the second half. For the game, Franklin was able to shoot 47% from the field and gained 21 points from the foul line, cruising to a 122-68 victory.

Brittney Shaner was the only other Pomeroy in double figures, finishing with 17 points and six rebounds.

Nichole Thompson led the Grizzlies with a double-double, scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jess Prewett also secured a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.

The Pomeroys return to action when they travel to Elsah, Ill., against Principia College on Friday night.  The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
