Pomeroys open season with second place finish

Bloomington, Ind. – The SMWC golf team got off to a great start to the 2013 season as they earned a second place finish at the Indiana University-East Invitational on Thursday afternoon.  IU-East was the host school for the event held at the Indiana University Golf Course in Bloomington.

SMWC finished with a team score of 341, thirteen points behind champion Indiana Wesleyan University.  In the four team field, Brescia University (342) and Oakland City University (374) finished third and fourth, respectively. 

Senior Kesley Fuqua led the Pomeroys, earning medalist honors with her match-best 77 on the par 72 course.  She had captured the top score of the day after defeating Brescia’s Abbey Zehner in a playoff.  Zehner had also finished with a 77 at the completion of 18 holes.    

Sloane Engle and Morgan Patterson showed well in their first meet of the season.  Engle carded an 84 on the day while Patterson tallied an 86.  Abby Abel (94) and freshman Shelby French (116) rounded out the team scoring for SMWC.    

The Pomeroy golf team returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 7 when they travel to Madison, Ind. at the Hanover College Invitational.  The golf match will take place at Sunrise Golf Course.  The two-day tournament will alsonv continue on Sunday, Sept. 8 with the match taking place at Shadowood Gold Course in Madison.
