Soccer Update #3: Marygrove College
September 11, 2012
It was a hard trip to Detroit and beautiful Marygrove College for the Pomeroys. To say that the first half was a disaster would be a little bland in comparison to the fact. The Mustangs came out firing on all cylinders and buried the Pomeroys under 6 goals without answer, three of them by Jessica McClendon.
The second half, then, became an exercise in focus, remembering our strengths, and pride. Fortunately, the Woodsies took that opportunity, playing most of the next 20 minutes entirely in the attacking third, pinning the Mustangs against their goal. It was not enough to produce a score though, and, late in the second half, the Mustangs were awarded a penalty shot for a foul in the box, converting it for a final score of 7-0.
Like finding a hundred dollar bill on the ground at a train wreck, there was a bright spot for the Pomeroys in Amanda Loebker’s remarkable play at forward. Her ability to check in, receive balls deep in the Mustang end, and play in other players in the attack may serve as a key for opening defenses later.
