Soccer Update #4: Cincinnati Christian University

September 14, 2012

The Golden Eagles of Cincinnati Christian University visited on Friday, September 14, and made life hard again for the Woodsies, taking away a 4-1 verdict. The Pomeroys showed some brilliance early on, taking the opening kickoff and keeping possession for 9 passes, and then continuing to demonstrate great possession early in the game. A quick turn of events came in the fourth minute, when CCU’s Libby Mason ran onto a ball that had gone high and bounced, getting a poke on it just before the onrushing Woods goalkeeper, Amanda Payton, could get a touch herself. The ball went into goal for a 1-0 lead.

The Pomeroys stayed with it, though, and another solid buildup ended in a foul and free kick outside the Golden Eagles’ box. Kylee White served the ball across goal, where Samantha Morrison knocked it home to knot the score 1-1. After that point, the Golden Eagles began to find their game and establish a large advantage in possession and trips into the attacking third. Near the end of the half, this paid off with an unassisted goal by Libby Esterkamp to give CCU a 2-1 halftime lead.

The Pomeroys, missing 3 starters to injury and illness, managed the game a little better in the second half, but still gave up two more strikes, one to Esterkamp and another to Michaelah Weaver. In the end, the Golden Eagles outshot the Pomeroys 26 to 5. Amanda Payton was called upon to make 9 saves and Alex Haan made another in her time in goal.

This loss leaves the Pomeroys 0-3.
