Pomeroys drop season opener to Franklin College
Sept. 6, 2013
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind. - The Pomeroy soccer team opened their season at home against Franklin College today. Though they took the lead twice in the first half, they could not slow down the Grizzlies’ Vanessa Benham, who scored three times in the second half to put the game away for Franklin.
The Grizzlies opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, with Benham breaking through unassisted and scoring on just the third possession in the Pomeroy defending third. The Pomeroys struck back soon, though, as Jordan Bray sent a ball through in the 6th minute to set up a breakaway for Amanda Loebker, who finished cleanly. Though both sides had fairly even amounts of possession, Franklin seemed more comfortable, but gave up another goal as Amanda Loebker stole the ball from the goalkeeper and put it in for the lead in the 18th minute. Late in the first half, the Grizzlies’ Brandy Ramaj got around the Pomeroys left side and was able to get the equalizer to end the half at 2-2.
The second half started as the first one had, with both teams threatening and the visitors scoring first, this time on another ball played over the top to Vanessa Benham in the 48th minute. Once again, the Pomeroys struck back at the 53rd minute on a long drive from Kylee White over the keeper into the top of the goal. That was the last time the game was even. Kayla Dragstrem scored on a penalty kick at 61 minutes, and Vanessa Benham added two more before the contest was over, to finish it at 6-3.
The Pomeroys’ next match is this Sunday against USCAA rival Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich. Game time is set for a 2 p.m. start.
