Pomeroys fall to Oakland City

Oct. 8, 2013

Oakland City, Ind. - The SMWC soccer team traveled to Oakland City University this afternoon to take on the Mighty Oaks without goalkeeper Georgie Macy and central defender Dulce Chavez. The weather was good, but it was a lackluster day for the Pomeroys, who allowed a goal in each half to go down 2-0.

The possession was fairly even, slightly in favor of the Pomeroys in the first half and slightly in favor of the improved Might Oaks in the second half, but their striker Carmen van Winkle found a way through on a wall pass in the 21st minute and slotted the ball past Whitney Teeters for the first goal. In the second half, it was freshman Mary Lee who was not tracked on a long free kick serve and was able to knock the ball in at the back post. In general, the Mighty Oaks came to play and avenge their last loss at home to the Pomeroys, creating more dangerous chances than SMWC.

Whitney Teeters ended the match with 5 saves. As always, Julie Debish gave a skillful, gritty performance in midfield, but suffered a serious ankle injury in a collision near the end of the match and did not return.

The Pomeroys are now 4-4-1 and travel to Midway College next week on October 15.
