Pomeroys drop season opening doubleheader to St. Ambrose

March 4, 2013

The Pomeroy softball team’s first weekend of spring games in Davenport, Iowa was full of eye opening positives in preparation for the team’s spring trip next week in Titusville, Florida.  The Pomeroys went 0-2 this weekend against the Queen Bees of St. Ambrose University.

In the first game on Saturday, the Pomeroys started out with junior Carly Painter as the pitcher.  Although Painter had eight walks, she retired five St. Ambrose batters she faced.  Both teams had five hits apiece for the game, however the Pomeroys were unable to score any runs in an 8-0 defeat.  Kelsey Rosselli, Melinda Bauer, Carly Painter,  Melana Minning, and Rebecca Latta each had a hit for SMWC.

In the second game against St. Ambrose, the team came out strong with sophomore Dani Owens as the pitcher.  Owens had eight strike-outs and only allowed six hits in six innings pitched.  Senior Jenni Faker came in as relief pitcher to finish out the game.  Offensively, Painter went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI; a single and a double that gave SMWC the lead heading into the final inning.  Unfortunately, SMWC fell short by one run in the last inning and dropped a 4-3 decision.

“I thought playing for the first time after a winter’s worth of practices that we were very competitive,” said head coach Gary Rodgers. “We had a lot of good leadership throughout the games which always makes for good team chemistry and this team has a lot of it.  I like the way that each player contributed something to a good team effort.  This team has dedicated themselves to an attitude of whatever it takes to get better and to win a national championship.  We had more pluses than minuses this weekend”.

Senior Kelsey Rosselli had similar thoughts about the weekend performance.  “Although we have made some adjustments in the field since the fall season, we have proved to ourselves as a team, that our defense is still strong,” said Rosselli.  “Once we started stringing hits together in our last game, we saw positive results.  This weekend was a learning experience and we plan on a competitive tournament in Florida.”

The Pomeroy softball team will be back in action on Sunday, March 10th in Titusville Florida with a stretch of spring games.
