April 12, 2014

Munster, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women’s softball team dropped a pair of games in a twin bill with the Peregrines of Purdue University-Calumet on Friday afternoon.  The Pomeroys fell 8-2 in the first game and 8-5 in the second game.  It was the first time the Pomeroys have been swept in a series since March 19.

Purdue-Calumet 8 SMWC 2

Purdue-Calumet (20-5) came into Friday’s matchup winning seven of their last eight games and have been one of the best teams in the NAIA nationally.  In the first game, the Peregrines would jump out to an early 1-0 in the first before a Kirby Schuble solo homerun tied up the game 1-1 in the top of the second.  The Peregrines would take the lead again off an RBI single by Ana Duda for the 2-1 advantage.

The Pomeroys would battle back, tying the game up in the top of the third when a Shelby Barnett RBI double brought home Ciara McClain.  That one-run lead would be short lived as Purdue-Calumet would tack on another run off a sacrifice fly.

The game would remain 3-2 in favor of the Peregrines before a five-run outburst in the sixth would blow the game wide open and Purdue-Calumet would earn their 20th win of the season.

In 6.0 innings pitched, SMWC’s Brooke Jordan (10-6) finished with 6 strikeouts, 6 walks, and 6 earned runs off 8 hits.

Purdue-Calumet 8 SMWC 5

Trailing 1-0 after the first, the Pomeroys would take their first lead of the series when they scored two runs in the top of the third.  Brooke Jordan would hit a 2 RBI single to give SMWC a 2-1 lead.

Purdue-Calumet (21-5) would respond in the bottom of the third when they scored four runs across the plate off a 2 RBI double, 2 RBI homerun, and a fielding error by SMWC.

The Pomeroys would battle back in the top of the fifth off a Barnett RBI double and a Jordan groundout that scored Barnett to get SMWC within one.  But Purdue-Calumet would score twice in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead by three runs.

SMWC would tally one more run in the sixth off a Shelby Turner RBI double, but it would be the last run the Pomeroys would score in the game.  The Peregrines would add one more run in the bottom of the sixth and would close out the seventh to earn the sweep.

In 6.0 innings pitched, SMWC’s Sarah Burnham (8-6) finished with 2 strikeouts, 3 walks, and 5 earned runs off 6 hits.

With both losses, the Pomeroy record now sits at 18-12.  They will play their next doubleheader this Sunday (April 13) against USCAA rival Lindenwood-Belleville.  The Pomeroys swept Lindenwood-Belleville in their first matchup on March 20. Both games went extra innings in the first meeting.  Sunday’s first of two games is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on the campus of SMWC.  It will be Senior Day as seniors Carly Painter and Shelby Barnett will be honored in a small ceremony at the conclusion of the second game.

*Note: The USCAA Softball Coaches Poll for Week 2 came out on Friday.  The Pomeroys are ranked No. 1 for the second straight week.  Lindenwood-Belleville came in at No. 2.  Sunday’s doubleheader will feature No.1 vs. No.2 and battle for the top spot in the USCAA.
