March 21, 2013

Belleville, Ill. – After dropping a pair of games to Missouri Baptist College on Wednesday, the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women’s softball team responded in a big way by defeating a good Lindenwood-Belleville team 9-7 and 1-0 in eight innings on Thursday afternoon.

After a scoreless first inning, the Pomeroys would be the first to get on board in the second inning.   Brooke Jordan would lead off with a single, followed by Kirby Schuble’s two-run homerun to center, giving the Pomeroys the early 2-0 lead.

The Lady Lynx (11-11-1) would respond in the bottom of the second when Ajah Douglas would score from third on a stolen base attempt by Marisa Cinquepalmi.  She was caught stealing, but Douglas would still score.  The Lady Lynx would pick up one more run when Nicolle Miskowicz scored from third on a Shelby Turner wild throw.  After two innings, the score was all knotted at 2-2.

Lindenwood-Belleville would tack on another run in the bottom of the third, but the Pomeroys would earn that run right back in the top of the fourth after Carly Painter scored from third when Rebecca Latta was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  The Lady Lynx would regain the lead again in the bottom of the same inning when Miskowicz’s ground out to second scored Michelle Pilster from third base.  After four innings, Lindenwood Belleville held a slim 4-3 lead.

There would be no further scoring until the seventh inning.  SMWC’s Sarah Burnham would tie the game on a homerun to deep right-center.  Jordan would then double later in the inning and would score Painter to give the Pomeroys the 5-4 lead.  Lindenwood-Belleville would tie the game up once again in the bottom of the seventh, taking the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Pomeroy bats would come alive once again.  After Ciara McClain bunted Breanna Lange over to third, a wild throw by the Lady Lynx’s Hannah Cockrum would score Lange.  McClain would then score on a single by Latta followed by a two-run homerun by Shelby Barnett.  The Pomeroys would put a four-spot in the bottom of the eighth and led 9-5.

The Lady Lynx would score two more in the bottom of the eighth, but could not get any closer as the Pomeroys came away with the victory.

In 8.0 innings pitched, SMWC’s Brooke Jordan finished with 2 strikeouts, 0 walks, and 6 earned runs.

In the second game between the two USCAA opponents, it would be a completely opposite story as far as scoring.  With 22 hits between both schools in the first game, there would only be 8 this time around.

The game would be a pitcher’s duel the entire way with no team scoring until extra innings were needed.  With the score tied 0-0 in the top of the eighth, the Pomeroys would break the deadlock when Lange would score from third after an RBI single by Latta.  The Pomeroys would nurse the slim 1-0 lead into the bottom of the inning, but Lindenwood-Belleville (11-12-1) was unable to get the necessary run to keep the game going.  A sacrifice bunt putout, strikeout, and fly out ended the game and the Pomeroys earned the victory.

SMWC’s Sarah Burnham had a phenomenal game in the circle.  In 8.0 innings pitched, she finished with 6 strikeouts, 0 walks, and 0 earned runs.

The Pomeroys have now won two straight and improved its record to 11-7.  SMWC’s next doubleheader will take place this Sunday (March 23) at Franklin College.  The first game is set for a 1 p.m. start.
