Softball Season Preview

March 1, 2013

Following a hardworking offseason, the Pomeroy softball team will be hitting the field for the first time this season under head Coach Gary Rodgers.  This year marks the seventh season for Rodgers who looks to guide his Pomeroys back to the USCAA National Tournament Championship.  Saint Mary-of-the-Woods softball will be starting their regular season play in Davenport, Iowa this weekend.  The first game is to be played on Friday, March 1 against St. Ambrose University’s Junior Varsity at 5:30 p.m. (CST).  Saturday, March 2, the Pomeroys will play a doubleheader against St. Ambrose University’s Varsity team, with the first game starting at 3:30 p.m. (CST).

After having a great season last year with a record of 36-22 and graduating four key players, the Pomeroys look to build on last year’s successes in hopes of winning the national championship for the first time since 2008.  The Pomeroys return with six seniors, two juniors, two sophomores, and three freshman newcomers.  The Pomeroys have some great veteran leadership that will be greatly beneficial to this spring season.  All of the Pomeroy softball players have one primary goal in mind: to be holding the national title trophy over their heads in Akron, Ohio on May 15.

During the offseason, the Pomeroy softball team lifted weights like Madmen while becoming quick as lighting during conditioning practices.  After coming back from winter break, the team went seven weeks practicing hard in both offensive and defensive play.  With the team being this prepared and hungry to play high-paced, competitive softball this weekend, the 2013 Pomeroy squad will be fun to watch this upcoming season. “We have worked on being the aggressor when taking the field by out-hustling and out-competing our opponent,” said Rodgers.  We certainly have the capabilities on doing so."

Stats will be available at the beginning of next week, as the team will make their way back to SMWC on Sunday, March 3.
