Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College head volleyball coach Steve Beeler is proud to announce the first volleyball signee for a brand new Pomeroy volleyball program.  On Wednesday, April 16, Maddy Howes became the first scholarship volleyball player in SMWC history to sign her letter of intent to play for the Pomeroys.

Howes is currently a senior at Terre Haute North High School in Terre Haute, Ind.  She was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball for the Patriots and a three-time All-Wabash Valley selection.  Howes has played seven years with the Crossroads of America (COA) club volleyball organization.  Beeler, the co-founder and director of the club, has coached Howes for three of her years in the club setting.

Academically, Howes is one of the best in her class.  She was a 2014 Academic All-State Honorable Mention honoree and is a part of the Fraternity of Highest Excellence at Terre Haute North High School for being in the top five percent of her class.

“Maddy is a great person and very talented volleyball player,” said Beeler.  “She embodies the work ethic, intelligence, and character we need to build a competitive program at SMWC.”

The Pomeroys will compete collegiately in the fall of 2015 and will be the first scholarship volleyball program in school history.

“It felt awesome to take the next step in my volleyball career,” stated Howes.  “I'm very excited to be the first volleyball scholarship recipient at SMWC and I'm looking forward to representing the school as well as getting to play for Coach Beeler again.  I can't wait for the day I step foot on the new court for the first time with my team!”

Maddy, the daughter of John and Bess Howes, plans to major in elementary education at SMWC.
