Leading by example and making a difference in their current positions and communities, four Master of Leadership Development (MLD) graduates of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) were honored. For the inaugural year of the 12 Under 40 awards, young leaders in the Wabash Valley were recognized at an award banquet on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015. Among the twelve honored were MLD alums, Brandon Halleck, Rachel Leslie, Stephanie Pence and Susan Turner.

On Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) education majors gathered on campus and participated in “Tech or Tweet,” an education Twitter chat with digital tool vendors, educators and other education majors around the world. Hosted by Maria Sellers, South Vermillion Community Schools tech integration specialist, and co-moderated by Melanie Beaver, Ph.D., education instructor at SMWC, and South Vermillion High School iCat Help Desk students, this event provided SMWC students currently in the Science of Reading and Emerging Literacy courses the opportunity to learn the value in being connected educators.

Students who aspire to be exceptional musicians will find their dream easier to fulfill with Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s new music scholarship. The SMWC Music and Theatre Department announces a new opportunity for students wishing to pursue a degree in music or music therapy. A collaborative effort between the Music and Theatre Department, the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of Admission, the SMWC Musician of Promise Scholarship is a $17,000 scholarship toward the cost of tuition, renewable for four years.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) was recently awarded a $20,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to be used to expand the program to assist more people. The single-year grant will provide new technology including computers and printers and limited funding for marketing to increase participation.

On September 19, 2015, a crowd gathered in this reflective space to celebrate the life of Anne Marie Coveney, 1979 SMWC alum and friend of the College.

The Speedbumps, indie folk group, comes to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), Cecilian Auditorium on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. The Speedbumps, from Kent, Ohio, will bring their Midwest vibes and folk-rock groove to The Woods for this fall concert.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) will host the eighth annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference for girls in middle school on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015. Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics™ (EYH) conferences nurture girls’ interest in science and math courses to encourage them to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The conference is open to girls in grades 6-8 and their parents, teachers or troop leaders. Through exciting and interactive hands-on workshops, participants learn that studying STEM can be fun.

In Indiana, the equine industry generates more than $2 billion each year; horse racing accounts for the biggest portion of that. So what happens to those revenue-generating race horses after they retire? Many find opportunities for new homes and off-the-track careers; some find it through the Mari Hulman George Equine Adoption at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC). Although the adoptable horses from the Mari Hulman George Circle S Ranch are retiring from racing, they have the potential to be successful in a variety of off-the-track careers. The third annual adoption will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
