Nolan receives alum award for purpose, devotion and leadership

“The people love her; they really do,” reads one of the nomination letters that contributed to Coachella, Calif., resident, Carol Nolan, Sister of Providence (SP) and 1954 graduate of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), receiving one of the College’s most prestigious alumni awards, the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Award. Nolan received the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Award for possessing similar purpose, devotion, community vitality and leadership as exhibited by the College’s foundress.

Kopielski receives alum award for service

“Camille has devoted her life to serving her school, church, community and country,” reads one of the nomination letters that contributed to Chicago, Ill., resident, Camille Filar Kopielski, 1959 graduate of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), receiving one of the College’s most prestigious alumni awards, the Frances Murphy Rumely Award. Kopielski received the Frances Murphy Rumely Award from the College for demonstrating outstanding dedication to civic, religious or educational organizations and leadership through her volunteer work for such organizations.

Equine students explore the Horse Capital of the World

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) equine students recently explored the “Horse Capital of the World,” Lexington, Ky., where they gained some real-world insight by visiting various equine facilities. The Equine Reproduction class toured equine hospitals, a reproduction center and breeding farm as they experienced the business side of the course content they had been studying all semester.

Reunion 2016 Highlights

Reunion Weekend at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is a time for alums to reconnect, not only with each other, but also with their alma mater. It is a coming together filled with laughter, tears of joy, nostalgia, stories, friendships and new connections. This year’s Reunion theme, “Many Paths, One Woods,” acknowledges the many paths that our alums can take but focus on the One Woods that brings them all together. One thing is for sure, with each of those many paths, there is also a unique story.

Music therapy major awarded Musician of Promise Scholarship

“Music is my therapy.” It was with these four words that Catherine Larson began her essay to apply for the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) Musician of Promise Scholarship. Larson continued to describe how music helped her through personal obstacles, which resulted in her desire to use her talents to help others through her chosen profession – music therapy. With an impressive essay, audition and interview, Larson became the first-ever SMWC Musician of Promise when she received the $17,000 scholarship to attend The Woods this fall.

Let equine students be the judge

Let equine students be the judge

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) students had the opportunity to experience an equine contest from the other side of the table – as judges. A group of seven SMWC students enrolled in the new horse judging class at The Woods traveled to Gainesville, Texas, to compete in the National Horse Judging Team Coaches’ Association Spring Contest. SMWC placed 9th out of 25 teams in the judging contest, which took place at North Central Texas College.

Nursing graduates pinned at The Woods

In a time-honored tradition dating back to the 1800s, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College held its second Nursing Pinning Ceremony. The moving ceremony signifies the completion of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Graduating nurses received their pins May 6, 2016, the evening before commencement.

179th Commencement Highlights

179th Commencement Highlights

The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) 179th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 7, 2015, represented the culmination of students’ academic achievement and personal growth. This academic year, SMWC graduated 215 students: four with associate’s degrees, 139 with bachelor’s degrees and 72 with master’s degrees. These graduates come from 30 different states. During commencement, SMWC President Dottie King, Ph.D., presented 92 traditional, online and graduate students with their degrees. The graduates represent eight states.
