Ivy Tech and SMWC partner for reverse transfer initiative

News | 06.29.2017

Ivy Tech Community College and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) have partnered to create a statewide reverse transfer agreement for students who have transferred to SMWC prior to completing their associate degree at Ivy Tech.

“In recent years, SMWC has been developing new academic programs which meet Indiana workforce gaps. This agreement will help promote educational attainment among Hoosiers, which is in line with our efforts,” said Janet Clark, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs at SMWC. “We are excited to further support our students’ goals through this partnership. We are looking forward to continuing our partnerships with Ivy Tech to better serve students in our state.”

In order to be eligible for the reverse transfer program, students need to meet the following transfer policies and conditions:

  • Students must have completed a minimum of 15 credit hours from Ivy Tech in order to be eligible for reverse transfer
  • Students must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate at SMWC
  • Students must have no prior associate degree from Ivy Tech
  • Students must have met all admission requirements for SMWC, including attaining at least a 2.0 GPA from Ivy Tech
  • Once a student has attained 70 or more credit hours (including the minimum of 15 from Ivy Tech) they will be notified each semester of their potential eligibility for an Ivy Tech Community College associate degree through reverse transfer until they opt-in or opt-out

“Ivy Tech is delighted to add Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College to the growing number of independent college partners in Indiana with a reverse transfer agreement. This is a direct benefit to any student who transfers to SMWC prior to completing the associate degree,” said Russ Baker, vice president for academic affairs at Ivy Tech. “Through reverse transfer, we transfer back SMWC courses and award the student an associate degree prior to completion of their baccalaureate. This can become an important credential in the workforce, particularly if unforeseen circumstances delay the completion of the bachelor’s degree.”

Ivy Tech Community College is responsible for determining, through reverse articulation and transcript review, which courses completed at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College may satisfy the associate degree requirements that will allow students to be awarded a degree. This process will take place in both fall and spring semesters.

The Reverse Transfer initiative is designed to assist student in pursuing their career goals. Ivy Tech Community College has partnered with several other institutions to offer reverse transfer, including: University of Southern Indiana, Indiana State University, Purdue University, Ottawa University, Trine University, University of Phoenix, Indiana Tech, Indiana Wesleyan, and Western Governors University.
