Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) Ring Day has been one of most highly anticipated events of the student’s college experience. This 91st year is no exception.

Eighty-three campus, distance and graduate students received their Woods Ring in a powerfully moving ceremony on March 23, 2013. The ring is visible evidence of the tradition of academic excellence, personal growth and fortitude, which are the roots of The Woods. It is an enduring symbol that is far more than a piece of jewelry. It honors academic success and sacrifice, while demonstrating the pride and loyalty the students and alumnae/i share.

“I’ve been counting down the days until Ring Day since I saw the ceremony my freshman year,” said Marguerite Frazier, equine business management major and junior class secretary. “To be able to take part in this tradition, following after 90 years worth of strong Woods women, is an incredible honor. I know that I truly will take the ring as a part of me – encircling not only my finger, but also my heart.”

Chelsie Welsh, human services major from Marshall, Ill., describes what the ring means to her. “The ring is a symbol of my journey. I will always be a part of The Woods.”

During the annual ceremony, President Dottie King, Ph.D., shared the importance of the day with the ring recipients. “Hold fast to the ties that bind you to these Woods,” said Kind. “Hold strong to the academic achievement and excellence that your ring symbolizes; it tells the world that you are part of an institution which has the grand and ongoing legacy of cherishing, expanding, and sharing the life of the mind.”

King presented the unique onyx and gold ring to each student. With its distinctive design, only SMWC students and alumnae/i have the privilege of wearing the ring. The oak leaves signify knowledge and the six acorns represent the founders of the College.

Dianna Kirksey, graduate student in Master’s of Leadership Development from Richmond, Ind., summed up her thoughts. “ Ring Day means I am coming close to the end. On the other hand, this is just the beginning.”
