Keyna’s afro-rock group, Jabali Afrika, brings a distinctive sound of powerful percussions and big vocal harmonies. They will perform at the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Four-Star Series on April 3, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the Cecilian Auditorium.

Jabali (Kiswahili for “rock”) Afrika, a multifaceted group, blends original compositions and traditional African melodies that come alive with a variety of instruments and vocals. They form a foundation of modern rock, jazz, gospel and blues. Drawing upon their shared history from the Kenya National Theatre Dance Troupe, the group’s choreography and African tribal costumes make for an spirited performance.

“Our music makes you dance, it uplifts the soul and it educates you. You become part of the act, because we kill that barrier between the audience and the band.”

Joseck Asikoye, founding member

With five albums to their credit, the music often reflects the social and political issues in Kenya. Their latest CD finds solace from these struggles, in songs with uplifting spiritual messages and melodies that celebrate romance and family.

Jabali Afrika is Kenya’s most-toured band, with more than 250 performances a year in Europe, Japan and the United States. The group’s credits include BBC, BET, CNN, Good Morning America, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, MTV, Radio France International and the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

The Four-Star Series at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College offers a diverse spectrum of performing arts and esteemed speakers who inspire, challenge and stimulate the imagination.
