Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) Music and Theatre Department proudly presents Ann Folino White’s “The Lady Victory,” Oct. 23-26, 2014, in the Cecilian Auditorium.

Adapted from Jane Vincent Taylor’s semi-autobiographical and fantastical poems of the same title and featuring original songs by Emily Nott, the play tells the story of a group of pregnant teenage girls and the nuns who care for them at Our Lady of Victory home for Unwed Mothers, in 1960s Oklahoma.

The Lady Victory scene

Hidden away from the world for the duration of their pregnancies, the "Victory girls" lessen their fears of what’s to come and what they will lose by staging their own version of the musical Oklahoma! As the girls struggle to understand what is happening to them, their confidante and mentor, Sister B begins to question her own sense of duty and morality. The powerful piece of theatre voices the longing, loneliness, confusion, and anger experienced by these young women.

“The only community to have seen the premiere last year was Michigan State University, and Ann Folino White actually rewrote some scenes, so our audience will be seeing a brand new play – our own premiere!” states Danielle O’Connor, theatre director at SMWC.

O’Connor chose the play on the recommendation of Carolyn Conover, a 2002 graduate of The Woods and current Master of Fine Arts student at Michigan State University (MSU). The playwright is a professor at MSU, and Conover actually starred in the premiere of the play.

“Carolyn suggested it since it was a play that required a strong female cast,” states O’Connor. “She knew the story was something with which the students here would connect, and she was right! I read it as soon as we closed our spring play, cried, and then read it again.”
