TOEFL offered at The Woods

News | 05.05.2011

For international students seeking to obtain a degree at an American college, mastering English is a critical step to gain admission. To help prepare these students, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) serves as a test center for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which is run by the Educational Testing Service. TOEFL is the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 7,500 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries. SMWC is the only test site in the Wabash Valley and one of 13 in Indiana.

“TOEFL is often required for students who do not speak English as a first language before entering into a higher education degree-seeking program,” said SMWC Director of the Learning Resources Center Kim LaComba. “The addition of TOEFL at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is an excellent resource to add to the Wabash Valley.”

Every year, nearly a million people take the TOEFL test to demonstrate their ability to use and understand English at the college level. It evaluates how listening, reading, speaking and writing skills are combined to perform academic tasks. The test is administered in an internet-based format. The program offers a variety of paid and free resources to prepare participants for the test and improve English-language skills.
