With spirituality as a core pillar of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), the theology program has always been a unique and admired degree. At SMWC, we are determined to ensure students are aware of the numerous paths they can take upon graduating. Here are seven careers you can have with a degree in theology.

1. Pastoral care in health facilities

Being a pastor at a healthcare facility takes the ability to empathize with patients. Whether it be a recovery from surgery, having an illness or fighting another medical condition, it’s important to be observant of each patient as an individual and be flexible with your care. Having the ability to remain calm is crucial in this career because the daily routine won’t always be the same. With this career comes the opportunity to be a positive factor in each patient’s journey.

Job tasks can include:

  • Meet with patients daily or weekly
  • Offer insight and positivity when needed
  • Meet with families of patients

2. Religious educator

As a religious educator, you’ll have the opportunity to build relationships with students through the teaching of different religions. In this career, it’s imperative to have a neutral mindset and unbiased methods when teaching courses such as religion, theology and philosophy. This career takes a lot of focus in understanding topics thoroughly.

Job tasks can include:

  • Hold weekly classes
  • Prepare and prompt exams and assignments
  • Engage students in classes by asking questions and encouraging discussion

3. Publisher (denominational newspapers)

Writing isn’t for everyone, but as a publisher for a denominational newspaper, you will have opportunities to show your knowledge in approving written content for your company or organization. Exhibit your knowledge of specific denominations and display your leadership in your daily routine. Through great communication and being a team player, you’re sure to have a successful career as a publisher.

Job tasks can include:

  • Offer feedback to writers on content
  • Approve documents, stories, interviews and other content for publishing
  • Proofread/edit content before publishing

4. Church music/choral director

In the world of music, it’s the ultimate goal to create a beautiful sound and message with the pieces you perform. As a church music or choir director, you’ll be tasked with arranging the ins and outs of music within a church. This can vary from community events/revivals, to even Christmas caroling throughout the month of December.

Job tasks can include:

  • Arrange themes and songs for concerts and performances
  • Set practice schedules and outside performance dates
  • Order music and collaborate with other church leaders for props/sets

5. Parish associate

A Parish associate is an ordained pastor that isn’t the main leading pastor within a church. Being a parish associate involves balance – many parish associates have other jobs outside of the church. Even though you aren’t the leading pastor, you still may have opportunities to be highly involved in the church. Being a parish associate can vary between different congregations.

Job tasks can include:

  • Volunteer for Parish events
  • Plan/head different fundraisers through congregation
  • Represent congregation at conferences

6. Youth pastor

Bringing out your inner child is one of the best parts of being a youth pastor. Interacting with children and young adults can be a rewarding experience. From attending youth conferences to taking the kids to church camp, there are several different opportunities in which you’ll build relationships with children that you can set a good example and be a positive role model.

Job tasks can include:

  • Book event venues
  • Record finances with financial committee of congregation/church
  • Recruit chaperones for youth group outings and trips when needed

  • Meet with students weekly
  • Hold events for students to attend
  • Recruit students for the campus ministry team

I got a BA in Interdivisional Humanities with a minor in Theology from the Woods in '76, followed by an MS in Adult Education from IUPUI then a MS in Religious Education from Loyola New Orleans. I served as parish DRE, pastoral associate, diocesan coordinator of family and childhood catechesis, high school religion teacher and campus minister. I would be happy to talk to anyone considering these fields.
