An old barn door covered in vines hangs by one hinge, years of use evident in its weathered appearance. A black cat peaks through rusted wire amid a pile of old tools. These are just a few images currently on display in the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) Art Gallery that speak for the artist’s unique perspective. The gallery was alive with conversation and congratulations during an opening reception for its current exhibition on Feb. 19, 2014. Sharon Boehl, senior graphic design major, is the artist behind the collection. As a culmination of her time at The Woods, the exhibit features various designs resulting from her coursework and internship experience. Boehl, of Oblong, Ill., credits her work as an inspiration from her surroundings and her family. “There are several photographs taken on the farm back home and many designs for a community club I am involved in,” states Boehl. The exhibition, on display through March 7, 2014, has a successful first night. Several people attended to browse Boehl’s work, and one of her photographs sold.

“While at SMWC, Sharon has not only worked in her declared medium of graphic design but also in photography, video and sequential art,” states Rebecca Andrews, chair of the department of Text & Image at SMWC. “This combination will prove to make her an even better designer.” Boehl will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in Art & Design. After graduating, her goal is to begin her career near Oblong and eventually start her own graphic design firm. The SMWC Art Gallery is located in Hulman Hall, room 130. Admission is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. For more information, contact Rebecca Andrews by phone at 812-535-5141 or by email at randrews@smwc.edu.
