Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) will begin accepting students to its newly introduced kinesiology major in fall 2020. Majors may choose between two concentration areas: leadership or health.
This new campus-based major, which is a part of the science and mathematics department, will prepare students who are interested in the study of human movement to pursue careers in a variety of fields: health, fitness, physical education, coaching and sports instruction, and sports management. Career opportunities include becoming a fitness trainer, health promotion specialist, strength and conditioning coach or sports administrator just to name a few.
The major also paves the way for students to pursue graduate study to become a physical therapist, physician, or chiropractor, among other health and human performance-related careers.
“SMWC provides a truly personal touch that promotes each students’ abilities and provides opportunities for personal growth in preparation of their professional pursuits,” said Penny Quinn, chair of the sciences and mathematics department. “The liberal arts education approach to the kinesiology program provides the flexibility for a variety of students to prepare for the broad field of human movement career choices and the expansive growth expected in this field.”
Students in the major will benefit from newly-developed courses at SMWC, including introduction to kinesiology, leadership in kinesiology, first aid and safety, sport in society, activities and special populations, healthy aging through activity, management in kinesiology settings, special population inclusion outdoor adventure education and opportunities for practicum experiences in addition to senior internships. Offered in the spring, the outdoor adventure education course will teach students the basic principles and concepts associated with outdoor activity planning and leading. Activities may include trust activities, climbing, hiking and kayaking, which will allow students to challenge themselves mentally, physically, socially and emotionally.
A general studies major will also be available in the fall. It was created as a transfer-friendly option for adults who have successfully completed previous college credits and wish to earn a bachelor’s degree. Many people have begun their college journey, earning college credits only to have unforeseen circumstances interrupt the completion of their degree. SMWC’s student-centered approach to education allows the College to meet students where they are and help them move forward.
“We are excited to offer the general studies degree as a way for students to complete their degree and engage in career exploration while preparing them with the valuable interpersonal skills employers need,” said Sara Boyer, executive director of academic affairs. “The distance program, which is now Woods Online, was developed to offer busy adult learners a way to complete a degree. This degree continues that valuable mission in our online and campus programs.”
