Adrienne Johnson

Adrienne A. Johnson, born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, received her B.S. in Apparel Design from Ball State University in 2005. During her career in fashion and retail, she continued to pursue art making for self-reflection and discovered the field of Art Therapy in 2017. Upon admission to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, she continued to develop her voice as an artist, learning to trust her intuition and express her emotional experience through painting, mixed media applications, collage and fiber arts. Her artwork was most recently on exhibition at the Garfield Park Arts Center in the 2019 show, Growth: Healing through Art

Adrienne’s work through her education as an art therapist represents her resilience in becoming an art therapist through emotional movement, playfulness and bright color with an underlying tone of hope for the future. She remains grounded and mindful in the process of art making while exploring personal and professional life experiences. As an art therapist, her work allows for both self and client exploration as she grows in the field of Art Therapy.

Adrienne, your work is beautiful, insightful, and moving. I especially love how you brought it all together in your nesting doll piece to express the embodiment of all you have been into who you are now. I have been blessed to join you on your journey.

Addrienne, Your art is so special in the way that represents your growth through the program. Creating a 3 dimensional work that puts this growth together and encompasses the previous pieces was an excellent way of allowing us to take it all in. Congratulations and thank you for sharing such great work!

I am so impressed with this collection and for me it's hard to put my feelings about art into words, what I do know is that I see you in this art, I see that you put yourself into each piece and that is what I love most. I see that there is a range here but yet cohesive. I know your clients will benefit from your self work and discovery as you help them find their pathways. Bravo friend!

This has been such a powerful intervention for me to watch you process through to represent each of your pivotal artworks in each one of the nesting dolls, and how that works with the embodiment. I would love to see you bring this full circle and then have you design a professional art therapy wardrobe based of you nesting dolls so that you can literally wear your art and your journey as you walk forward into your career! It's be amazing to watch you transform even though I came into your journey half way! You are doing important life changing work, and you have changed my life by being in it! Thank you for showing up so well, and allowing yourself to be seen! You are brave! This is such a strong representation of your journey and who you have become in the process! Thanks again for allowing me, and others to witness your journey! Congratulations on everything! This last semester is going to go by so fast! Enjoy it!

Adrienne, these nesting dolls are amazing as a reflective piece on your time, resilience and on your becoming. Your insight, leadership, and calm has been a gift to me (and many) over our time at SMWC. Thank you for this gift. She goes, we go. And I'm hoping that eventually I get to peak into each nesting doll, and find that they each have their own calendaring system that they use.

Hi Adrienne, I love your use of color and flow of your images, they provide me a real sense of floating and possibility--a spiritual ethereal quality. So organic and inviting especially your use of movement and playfulness--an important aspect of healing I am finding as I age!

I love the jung quote.

Thanks for sharing your work and the story of your progress through the course. The work you've chosen for the show gives me a lot of insight into the way that you think and how you will work with clients. I'm drawn to your fiber "roots" and relize that I rarely work in that medium. I look forward to reaching out for guidance as our paths unfold.

I love the progression of growth represented through the art pieces, including mixed media. The Russian nesting dolls perfectly capture and reinforce this theme, integrating it into a whole. The quote by Carl Jung (in your art) as well as the quote by Anne Lamott (spoken in your explanation) are life centering words, providing a lingering core to your art's message. Great job!
