With a population of about 60,000 people, Terre Haute has been a popular town for decades. Home to four Higher Education institutions, there’s a variety of activities for all ages to do. Check out five features that make Terre Haute one-of-a-kind.
1. Square Donuts
You read it correctly! Square Donuts has become a staple in the community with two locations in the Terre Haute area. From various flavors to the well-known regular glazed donut, eating a Square Donut is just one item that gives you a warm welcome to Terre Haute.
2. The Coca-Cola bottle
In 1915, Chapman J. Root, T. Clyde Edwards, Earl R. Dean and Alexander Samuelson designed and entered a rendering of a Coca-Cola bottle, which was selected in the national competition for the bottle design. It has then become a staple and world-famous trademark that the Terre Haute community is proud of. There are uniquely painted Coco-Cola bottle sculptures scattered around Terre Haute, and SMWC even has its own. Can you find them all?
3. Art & Entertainment
Whether you’re enjoying a walk at Deming Park, find yourself at Twelve Points or are just enjoying downtown Terre Haute, there are several murals that can be found throughout the town. Painted by local artists, the number of murals in Terre Haute continues to grow. Talk about a perfect photo-op! In addition to the Wabash Valley’s love for art, The Sheldon Swope Art Museum, founded in 1939, houses several art pieces and is free and open to the public. Terre Haute also has a love for music as local music festivals are held throughout the summer and fall seasons. The Mill, the previous Weston Paper Mill in Terre Haute, is now a growing music venue that showcases public concerts. Past performers have included Nelly, The Beach Boys and most recently, Gary Allan.
4. Entrepreneurs
As Terre Haute is home to four higher education institutions, many graduates have lived in Terre Haute for their entire lives, while others decide to stay. Whether Terre Haute has been your home for years or if you moved here, new businesses are always starting up. Along with being heavily involved in the community, many community leaders own their own businesses. There is nothing better than embracing the outdoors, especially at The Woods. If you’re looking to explore the town, though, there are several options throughout the community.
