SMWC Celebrates National Intern Day

Blog | 07.27.2023

At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), students are encouraged to engage in hands-on and real-world experiences. Internships are one of the various ways students can gain skills personally and professionally to help them thrive after graduating. From gaining new skills to boost your resume to learning more about yourself, internships help students learn more about life after earning their degree. Check out what three SMWC students shared about their summer internship experiences!

Year: Sophomore
Major: Environmental Science with a concentration in wildlife conservation and management
Location of Internship: White Violet Center, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana

“This summer, I interned at the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice with the Sisters of Providence. I wanted to complete this internship because I had been volunteering for the Sisters when they offered me a place with them for the summer. My experience has been better than I could have hoped. The wonderful staff, amazing animals and new experiences have made it the best summer I have ever had.”

Hang Tran

Year: Senior
Major: Exercise Science, minor in Massage Therapy
Location of Internship: Mercy Crest Assisted Living, Barling, Arkansas

“This summer, I worked with the older population by helping them with exercise and massage. I wanted to complete an internship this summer because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and go somewhere other than The Woods to meet different people. My main duties there are helping with leg strengthening and balance to help them reduce fall risks, assisting with outside walking and giving some massages to some people.

Through this internship, I learned how to work in a professional environment and apply the knowledge that I have learned in past semesters. I also had the opportunity to observe the hard work and difficulties that healthcare workers and therapists face when working with the older population as well as how they deal with these issues.”

Bailey Thompson interned at WalkerHughes Insurance.
Bailey Thompson

Year: Senior
Major: Marketing and Digital Marketing
Location of Internship: WalkerHughes Insurance

“I am working as a marketing intern at WalkerHughes Insurance this summer out of their Indianapolis office! I wanted to do an internship to gain more experience in the marketing field and work on a team with others. I have loved my time at WalkerHughes and have met the best people in the process. Some projects I’ve done so far include completing a social media audit, creating content in InDesign and making a content calendar for their Instagram account.”

Erin Williams interned at CEC this summer.
Erin R. Williams

Year: Senior
Major: Environmental Science, minors in Chemistry and Business
Location of Internship: Civil and Environmental Consultants Inc. (CEC)

“I am still unsure of where exactly I want to end up after graduation, so I wanted to experience a position heavy on fieldwork and more environmental/conservation based than my previous internship. My internship has been fantastic! The people at CEC are super welcoming and beyond helpful when I have questions. I have traveled a lot while working on several bat surveys, and I’ve gotten to experience a lot of work that very few people get to do.”
