Top 10 Dorm Room Essentials

Blog | 08.08.2023

As a college student, there are various apparent items to take with you. Some can get missed, though. Check out 10 essential items to consider before Move-In!

1. Bedding
At SMWC, we’ve got you covered for a bed frame and mattress, but it’s up to you to bring your bedding. Whether you have a set color scheme or are a fan of patterns, the possibilities are endless to have a creative bedspread set up. A mattress pad or topper is also a popular item among college students.

2. Desk Lamp
No matter which residence hall you live in, each student has a desk and chair in a dorm room. Desk lamps can come in handy when you must study late while your roommate is sleeping.

3. Trash Can
It can often be missed on the packing list, but trash cans are necessary for any dorm room and bathroom. Don’t forget the trash bags!

4. Laundry Supplies
One unique feature of SMWC? FREE laundry! Each residential floor has washers and dryers for your own use. All you need to bring is a laundry basket, dryer sheets and laundry detergent or detergent pods.

5. Storage Bins
Storage bins are very useful whether you live near SMWC or hours away. Storage bins will help you stay clean and organized throughout the school year, from storing snacks and seasonal clothes to organizing other supplies.

6. Everything Closet Oriented
Although you will have your own closet, there are items that can help you make the most of your space when it comes to all your closet needs. By bringing items like baskets and bins, you’ll have plenty of space to spare. From hangers to shoe organizers, there are multiple ways to stay organized while adding touches of character to make it your own. With shelves above your hanging clothes, you can store other items, including bath towels, seasonal jackets and more.

7. Power Up
Although there are multiple outlets in your room, sometimes it’s nice to have them all in one place. Pack a power strip! For example, sometimes you might need your desk lamp, phone charger and laptop charger to be plugged in at once in the same area where you’re studying.

8. Décor
Express yourself! There are several options when decorating your dorm room, from posters to tapestries. Whether you’re into plants or prefer vibrant colors, several store and online apps can help set the perfect vibe to make your dorm room your own.

9. First-Aid Kit
It can be an overlooked item, but a first-aid kit can be handy when you’re constantly on the go (like most college students). Whether you need allergy medicine or a band-aid for those dreaded paper cuts, first-aid kits can be a lifesaver.

10. Caffeine Items
Whether you prefer coffee, tea or other natural caffeine products, having them in your dorm room will work to your advantage. Late-night studying? Brew a cup of coffee. Looking for a quick pick-me-up before class? Making hot tea is a simple process! Even grab-and-go drinks with natural caffeine go great with a busy college lifestyle.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is less than 15 miles from several convenient stores, grocery stores and locally owned shops to help you get any missed essential items you might need after moving in.
