By Joynelis “Joy” Caminero Santiago, music therapy major
Hey, proud Pomeroys! It’s Joy, your senior class president, here with a message as we step into a new academic year. Whether you’re just beginning your journey at The Woods or preparing for your final year, I want to encourage you to fully embrace every opportunity that Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College has to offer. This is a special place, and there are countless ways to make the most of your time here.
Visit the Career Center
Let’s start with a tip that I wish I had known earlier: visit the Career Center! If you have any questions about resumes, cover letters, internships, jobs, interviews, or even just want to have a great conversation about how to maximize your college experience, Martha Reed is your go-to person. Located on the 2nd floor of the Rooney Library, she is one of the kindest and most knowledgeable people you will meet. Her wisdom and dedication to helping students shine are truly amazing. Before you head over, consider stopping by Donna at the Woods Cafe (first floor of the Rooney Library) for a delicious coffee, matcha latte or refresher.
Get Involved
Next up, GET INVOLVED! This is an essential part of your college experience. The people you meet in the hallways, in class or at events and student organizations could become your future colleagues, business partners or even lifelong friends. There are so many opportunities to connect and engage on campus, and I cannot stress enough how valuable these connections can be. Keep up with all the exciting events and news by following our social media (@smwcollege). You’ll find endless ways to dive into campus life and make the most of your time here.
Explore the Beauty of Campus
Our campus is nothing short of stunning, and it’s worth taking the time to explore. Make it a habit to relax or get some exercise by walking around and discovering the beautiful spots on campus. Visit the barn to meet the alpacas and horses or check out the Farm Store at the White Violet Center for seasonal produce, herbs and flowers.
Embrace Traditions
Traditions at the Woods are a cherished part of our community, and I encourage you to be a part of as many as you can. Even if you’re not familiar with all of them yet, participating in these traditions will enhance your college experience. Some highlights include the Acorn Ceremony, where seniors welcome freshmen; Bed Races during Homecoming Week, a fun competition for the Homecoming Cup; and Midnight Breakfast, an event organized by SAC and Campus Life to help students de-stress with BINGO, awesome prizes and delicious breakfast foods on study Monday before finals. These traditions are more than just events; they are opportunities to bond with your peers and create unforgettable memories.
Make the Most of Your College Years
Remember, these four years of college will pass by in the blink of an eye. Study hard and work diligently, but also take time to enjoy all the beautiful things the Woods has to offer. Balance is key to making the most of your college experience. I wish each of you the very best as you embark on this academic year. And if you see me around campus, don’t hesitate to say hi!
Here’s to a fantastic year ahead, full of growth, exploration and joy 😉. Welcome back, and let’s make it a memorable one!
