SMWC Senior Shares Internship Experience

During my internship at the Indiana Statehouse, I gained invaluable hands-on experience that pushed me to step outside my comfort zone. I initially learned about this opportunity during a tour of the Statehouse given to the Presidential Corps, where the guide mentioned in passing that undergraduate students had the opportunity to intern with the legislature. I felt drawn to apply because of my passion for government and politics and decided to do so.

Throughout my time at the Statehouse, I addressed constituent inquiries, provided guidance to constituents on government resources and drafted official correspondence on behalf of three state representatives. I took detailed notes during House committee meetings to support legislators and their staff in tracking legislation effectively and had the chance to conduct policy research, which deepened my understanding of legislative processes and allowed me to provide valuable insights for representatives. I also composed talking points that helped representatives communicate key messages on their legislative priorities and had the opportunity to meet and network with politicians, lobbyists and other key players in the political landscape. This experience gave me confidence, turning what initially felt intimidating into second nature.

This internship taught me the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone and solidified my desire to pursue future opportunities in government and politics. Internships help you apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations, form connections and gain clarity on career goals. Even after my internship ended, the connections I made led to further opportunities, including working on a state representative’s re-election campaign. I believe all SMWC students should strongly consider internships, as they offer a supportive environment to develop professional skills and to decipher if what you think you want to do is truly the right fit for you. I would tell any student considering an internship that it’s a valuable stepping stone toward a fulfilling career and will help them build confidence and industry knowledge that extends well beyond graduation.
