By Dottie L. King, Ph.D, president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College
This is beginning of the Lenten Season. Our hearts are turned toward our need for Jesus and our need for Spring! My heart is filled with gratitude for the tangible signs of blessings and determination to continue on our journey together.
During Ash Wednesday Mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on campus, we ended by singing “Word of God” written by Bernadette Farrell. I was struck in a special way by the words of the chorus: “Make us now your living sign. Recreate us for your purpose in this place and in this time.”
The core of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is fixed and rooted in our creation as a Catholic institution, born out of sacrifice and dedicated to meet the needs of the students of the time. And yet, I was struck today by the reality that we are being recreated in this place and in this time. We are blessed with renewed interest among today’s students. They are drawn to this place and they are committed to their own futures and to make a difference in the future.
My prayer for those of us who care deeply for the College, who support its enduring mission and for those whom we serve is that we will be faithful to our inheritance and that we will bless the next generations, as we have been blessed.
