As an emerging art therapist, I am ready to combine my experience as a professional K-12 art educator with my training in the field of art therapy to develop a practice that focuses on providing a safe space where self-expression and understanding is priority. As an emerging art therapist, I view myself as being very patient and kind, while implementing structure and organization. Throughout my time in this program, I have developed the ability to monitor and adjust depending on the situation, which can pour into my career in art therapy. Focusing on what I have control over and understanding the areas I do not have control over. The theme of simplicity with use of ink pen and paper in my artwork represents my personality and how I believe that keeping things basic can be beneficial to healing and understanding.

The art style is so amazingly unique and shows a deeper meaning hidden in the ink. I loved looking through the pieces of artwork.

Congratulations Courtney! I appreciate the intimacy and the intensity of your work. It’s not lost on me that you’ve chosen to show pieces that use the most available materials as a container. That’s what art therapists are capable of doing, turning the mundane into magic. Simple pen and ink on lined paper and the most profound thoughts and feelings come pouring out. Thank you for sharing! You will be amazing in your work with K-12. They will be lucky to to have you in their lives.

Courtney, congrats on such a successful art show and journey towards integrating the duality that your professional life represents between educator and therapist. As a former educator myself there are many times when I have reflected on how teaching is therapeutic, and therapy is a way of teaching myself and others how to be more real, more authentic and a pathway towards wholeness. I never tire of looking at your marvelous pen and ink portrayals of inner conflict, a search for meaning and purpose and the painful challenges we all face to find our way in this world portrayed beautifully I think in the image Climb! Thanks so much for sharing your vision!

What powerful imagery! I can feel your journey through your art. Not only the struggles of being in the graduate program while working full time, but also the challenge of covid and the pandemic, the challenges in supervision, the challenges with clients and (I think) bureaucracy. Thank you for sharing your art and your journey with us, good luck in your future!
