As a Christian, I often look for ways to use my passion for art and art history to help others and to do charitable work. Therefore, I sought a Master of Arts in Art Therapy with an Emphasis in Counseling (MAAT) degree at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) to improve my skills. My studies at SMWC have increased my knowledge of how Religiously-Integrated, Christian CBT and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy can help some clients better manage their challenges. Being an MAAT student wasn’t easy because I worked full-time or more as a financial manager and auditor for the federal government at the same time. However, after chronic illnesses and retirement, I continued my quest for the MAAT degree.
I feel hopeful as I use my newfound skills creating interventions on various levels of the Expressive Art Therapies Continuum, to help others feel hopeful during troubling circumstances and to think about ways to solve problems. During several internships, I have seen how Art Therapy leads to improved therapeutic outcomes for those with chronic illnesses such as cancer and others with depression and anxiety. However, I have come to understand that Art Therapy is not only for those who have mental and emotional disturbances, but it’s also beneficial for those who feel grounded and secure to maintain resilience in preparation for challenges. It can be used to build and to strengthen self-esteem in communities where there are less opportunities for growth. My studies at SMWC led me to an interest in research on the impact of positivity and faith on survivors of cancer and on those who have experienced racial trauma.
I hope my art will show that the colors black and the browns may also be used as symbols of honor, resilience, strength, and beauty. I hope those who view my artwork will see my commitment to providing services to diverse client populations and my sincere desire to help.
I thank everyone who has supported me on this journey to include family and friends. Most of all, I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who carried me past deadly deceases allowing me to continue to help others. As I work with various clients and use the skills I have gained, I emerge more resilient and dedicated to helping others reach their goals. I am encouraged that Art Therapy can lead to improved therapeutic outcomes and my work shows the hope I have for various populations.
