Apply to the Gioannini Research Fellowship
Participating students will have the opportunity to work with a faculty member at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Potential research projects include topic related to environmental health, immunology, microbiology, infectious disease, biochemistry, or cell biology.
The 10-week Gioannini Fellowship includes housing, at no cost, on the University of Iowa Carver campus, reimbursement for travel, and a monetary award for other expenses. The selected candidate will be paid a stipend of $4,125 – one-half upon acceptance and one-half upon successful completion – and will be reimbursed reasonable mileage to travel to the University of Iowa for commencement of the fellowship and to travel home at the conclusion of the fellowship.
To be eligible, students must:
- Be a sophomore, junior or senior in the fall following summer fellowship
- Have a declared major in a pre-professional area (pre-medicine, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy, etc.) or in biology, environmental studies, or medical technology.

- List of completed science courses
- Plans for attending graduate or professional school
- Research preferences from a list of available opportunities
- Educational and/or career aspirations
- Personal and professional goals for the summer research fellowship
- Description as to how this summer research fellowship might apply to future plans
- Any additional information that may support application
- Two (2) recommendations from faculty of the Sciences & Mathematics Department (optional third recommendation from another faculty or staff member)

Application Process
- Complete specified electronic application through SMWC Career Center account
- Following receipt of completed application, the Career Development Center will obtain electronic recommendations
- Upload resume to SMWC Career Center account (Applicants are encouraged to work with the Career Development Center early in the application process to prepare a professional resume.)
