Take a trip down the road less traveled with Good Morning America producer Mellen O’Keefe as she shares her experiences in broadcast media during “An Evening with Mellen O’Keefe” on Nov. 1, 2011, at 7 p.m., in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s (SMWC) newly renovated Woods Student Center, 1st floor, Rooney Library. This event is free and open to the public.

From touring the palaces of the king of Sweden to lugging cameras through the African bush, O’Keefe has made a significant impact in the world of broadcast media for decades. As a producer, writer and director for segments and shows on ABC News, CBS News, Barbara Walters, The Travel Channel and Oxygen Media, she has witnessed firsthand the evolution of media and its effects on today’s society.

“She’ll share stories from her perspective and reflect on the experiences that shaped her,” said Lori Henson, assistant professor of journalism at SMWC, who will conduct the question and answer session. Exposure to independent, successful women offers students at The Woods a unique glimpse of the world beyond college. “For us teachers,” Henson said, “we want our students to have as much access to the professional world as possible.”

O’Keefe will explore the evolution of media through her personal experiences and discuss the importance of being a “skeptical media consumer” by gathering information from a variety of sources. Students and members of the community alike will leave entertained and enlightened by O’Keefe’s unique experiences and contemporary outlook on media.

“This is a great opportunity to reflect on what I’ve learned,” said O’Keefe, who is excited to share her experiences, giving life to the facts and figures of media and technology. “It wasn’t always easy, but it was always interesting!”
