Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College President Dottie King, Ph.D., has been appointed to the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) Board of Directors. King assumed her responsibilities on February 4, 2015, at the close of the 2015 NAICU Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., and will serve a three-year term.

NAICU is the leading national organization of private nonprofit higher education. NAICU board members set the association agenda on federal higher education policy; actively encourage support of association priorities and initiatives; and oversee the organization’s financial administration.  The organization serves as the unified voice of more than 1,000 independent college and university presidents, and specialized, state and regional association executives.

“Private higher education today faces an unprecedented combination of challenges including the deepening role of the federal government, tightening fiscal constraints, rapidly changing student demographics, technological innovation and globalization,” said NAICU President David L. Warren, Ph.D.  “The experience and leadership of Dottie King and the other new NAICU board members will be critical in the years ahead as the association and our members navigate this time of change and challenge for American higher education.”

King was appointed the College’s 16th president in 2011, following more than 25 years of service in a several higher education positions. She serves on the Indiana 8th Congressional District Higher Education Advisory Committee. She is a member of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s Business-Higher Education Forum, a committee of business and postsecondary leaders that serves as both the chamber’s policy committee on higher education issues and an opportunity for collaboration between these two constituencies. King is an active member of Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU), Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI), NeXXt Scholars and the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce.
