Gender Inclusivity in Research
The Institutional Review Board at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods encourages researchers to be sensitive to and inclusive of differences based upon identities of participants when collecting demographic data and when writing consent/assent forms. Regarding gender identity, in particular, the simplest way to inquire is to provide the following options:

If there is a need to use gender pronouns in consent or assent forms, the gender neutral his or her pronouns are commonly utilized.
