Statement of Student’s Academic Freedom
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College supports its students’ right to free speech to encourage personal growth and self-expression. The College upholds this right even when the student’s opinion conflicts with local, national, or Catholic opinion and/or doctrine. Therefore, the college does not regulate a student’s opinion, nor can opinions expressed in the classroom or behaviors outside the classroom, not related to course objectives, influence a professor’s evaluation of academic performance. When a student chooses to make her/his opinion or viewpoint known, it is the student’s responsibility to indicate that she/he speaks only for her/himself and not for the institution.
