Packing Tips for College Students

Blog | 08.06.2024

As a college student, packing can be overwhelming. When packing to go to your home away from home, take steps to ensure an easy-going process. Check out some packing tips for college students!

When you move in at SMWC, our Orientation Leaders will be there to help you unload your vehicle.

1. Make a list, check it twice
Don’t worry; we know you’re not Santa Claus but making lists for packing can help decrease stress and help you keep track of everything you need for college. First-year student? You’ll probably have more items than most, so make a complete list and double-check it before packing. As you get items packed, check them off the list.

2. Clean before packing
Face it, you don’t want your first college activity to be laundry. Washing your clothes, bed sheets and more will only help you settle in once you’re moved back into your dorm. By cleaning your belongings before packing, you’re eliminating a step when it comes time to unpack.

3. Sort & Organize
It may not seem logical to sort your items before packing when you can do that at your dorm, but organizing your items before packing them away can be a massive time-saver when you arrive at your dorm or new living quarters.

4. Pack efficiently
Organizing your items is essential, but so is the strategy for packing items. For example, when packing efficiently, you may realize you can fit twice as many items in a tote or box. Packing efficiently can help you get all your items to college with twice the amount of bags, boxes and totes.

5. Do a final count
Before you pack up to leave home, do a final count of all items on the list you made. Doing a final tally of all items will ensure you’re headed to college prepared and allow you to remember what you may need to get once you get to your dorm.
