Plenty of activities during SMWC Family Weekend including band and choral concerts

News | 03.22.2022

After COVID postponed the tradition of Family Weekend at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) for the past two years, it will take return in 2022. Family Weekend offers each family the opportunity to visit students and see their personal and academic growth. Families can meet other students and their families as well as interact with faculty and staff.

The weekend also has many activities including concerts, equine activities, student poster shows and a student achievement banquet that recognizes their academic and leadership achievements. Student clubs and organizations will also be hosting events.

The SMWC Band Concert will take place on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Cecilian Auditorium in the Conservatory of Music. “All the Pretty Horses” will be presented by the SMWC Concert Band under the direction of Dr. John McIntyre. The concert will be free and open to the public. Masks are optional.

The concert will salute the SMWC Mari Hulman George School of Equine Studies with music about and inspired by horses. Dr. Edward Ferguson, department chair and associate professor will narrate and the SMWC mascot, Onyx, will make an appearance.

The concert will feature works ranging from Old Town Road to the Stallion of the Cimarron. Also featured will be the premiere performance of the SMWC Saxophone Ensemble.

On Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the SMWC Choirs will perform their spring choral concert, “Shall We Gather”. This concert will combine the voices of the SMWC Chorale, Madrigals and Woods Vocal Ensemble. They will explore the beauty of gathering in song to express their shared humility, and how that has been complicated and overcome the past two years.
