R.S.V.P. Luncheon: Quest for Equity and Opportunity

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College presents a panel discussion on the Quest for Equity and Opportunity at the R.S.V.P. (Resources, Strategies and Valued Partnerships) Luncheon at The Woods on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 in the Le Fer Hall Ballroom from noon to 1:30 p.m.

On this date across the country, thousands of women will join in Equal Pay Day, a national day of public awareness to illustrate the gap between men’s and women’s wages. The date symbolizes how far into 2011 women must work to earn what men earned in 2010. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women are paid only 77 cents for every dollar a man is paid.

With Equal Pay Day as the foundation, the panel will share professional experiences and encouragement regarding equity and opportunities for women. Discussion points include effecting positive change, leveraging networks and adopting proactive practices. Sharon Ammen, Ph.D. and theatre major Danielle O’Connor will deliver a dramatic reading titled Voices of Women at Work.

Panelists include:

  • Barbara Brugnaux, J.D., ’70, Senior Judge, State of Indiana;
  • Tiffany Macke ’08G, Program Manager, Community & Economic Development Program, University of Illinois Extension;
  • Glenna Simons, J.D., Chair of the SMWC Social and Behavioral Science Department; and
  • Tuesday Norris Strong, MBA, ’03, Director of Planning Studies, Office of Outreach, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Christine Wilkey, LSW, ACSW, assistant professor of human and in the Master of Leadership Development program services at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will moderate. Wilkey also teaches an interdisciplinary course in women’s leadership in the Woods External Degree program.

The R.S.V.P. Luncheon at The Woods series seeks to strengthen and develop valued partnerships between the regional community and the students, faculty and staff of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College by sharing resources and strategies. 

Previous presentations have included Lecia Barker, Ph.D., senior research scientist, National Center for Women and Information Technology; Tony Bennett, Ph.D., Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction; and Brian Stemme, project director, BioCrossroads;

The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Career Development Center hosts the event in partnership with the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department.  Funding is provided by a grant from the Lilly Endowment.
