Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) alumni and their families, students, faculty and staff embraced the fall sunshine at Homecoming on Saturday, October 5. Throughout the day, they attended athletic events, experienced activities and good food and ended the day cheering on the Pomeroy sprint football team as they defeated the Oakland City University Mighty Oaks in a 37-0 victory.
Alumni, friends, students, faculty and staff took part in the day’s festivities to show their Pomeroy Pride. Athletic events included the equestrian competition, an alumni softball game, a men’s volleyball scrimmage and the sprint football game.
Conversations and laughter filled the dining hall during lunch and in the homecoming tent as attendees visited a caricature artist and participated in student organization activities and “Minute to Win It” games sponsored by the SMWC Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Sarah Stultz Mahady ’05, director of alumni relations, was thrilled with the turnout and the energy that filled the campus. “It was a beautiful day at The Woods to celebrate our future alums as well welcome back our alumni and friends. It’s always heartwarming to reconnect,” said Mahady.
After lunch, the crowds made their way over to Jay Barrett Field at West Vigo High School to support the SMWC sprint football team against the visiting Mighty Oaks. The Pomeroys fought hard throughout the game and pulled out a win of 37-0. There was a full house, as more than 1,200 fans filled the stands. Additionally, the SMWC Cheer and Dance teams showed their school spirit on the sidelines of the field.
Halftime of the game included events to celebrate Homecoming. The SMWC Dance team performed a routine, and 10 students competed in a frisbee throwing contest. Earlier in the week, students participated in the annual Homecoming Cup Games. The winning team, the PomsPoms was announced and received the 2024 Homecoming Cup at halftime.
The weekend concluded with Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the annual RoseWoods lunch for alumni couples of a SMWC graduate and a Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology graduate. It was an entire weekend of Pomeroy Pride!
