SMWC awards scholarships to promising musicians

Three Indiana students were chosen this fall to receive music scholarships at $18,000 each. Meet the 2018 Musician of Promise Scholarship recipients:

John Grace Jr.

John Grace Jr. graduated from Merrillville High School and was very active in choir, musicals, and the Thespian Troupe #1692. His primary instrument is his voice and he enjoys listening to many different kinds of music such as jazz, R&B and symphony orchestras. He has been a part of many productions in Merrillville including The Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast and Sister Act. Grace is looking forward to being a music therapy major at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and is excited for his first college experience.

Michael Natt

Michael Natt graduated from Terre Haute South Vigo High School and was very active in choir, singing competitions, the ensembles and varsity swimming. He also performed in an estimated 16 musicals while in high school. His main instrument is his voice. A versatile singer, Natt can sing a variety of music from contemporary Christian and classical to musical theater. He loves to do musicals, but his true desire lies in working with children, and still being able to sing with it. That is why music therapy at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is the perfect fit for him.

Katy Pell

Katy Pell is a graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo High School. She has been involved in many musical endeavors throughout her life.  In addition to singing, Pell also plays piano, guitar and ukulele.  She was involved in a variety of school choirs and musicals as well as community choirs including at Indiana State University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and First Congregational Church.  She was also a varsity cheerleader in high school. Pell has been dreaming of becoming a music therapist for many years and is excited to attend SMWC to bring it to fruition.


Admitted, first-time (freshmen) women and men students attending SMWC full-time in a music degree program may compete for the Musician of Promise Scholarship. Students must submit an audition request form followed by an audition, essay, and interview. The deadline to submit all required application materials is Nov. 10.
