Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) Chorale and Madrigals will present the annual spring concert on Sun., April 27, at 3 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. This year’s program, “Still I Rise: Celebrating the Strength and Wisdom of Women,” features music that celebrates women including pieces composed by popular young female composers and features female poets.
“I think people will find this to be an enjoyable and meaningful concert,” states Michael Boswell, SMWC director of choirs. “There are pieces with interesting sound effects and percussive sounds never heard in the Church before, as well as exquisite pieces featuring violin and cello.”
The students have spent many hours over several months to ensure that this concert delivers to the audience. “Because there are demands in some of this music they’ve never had to meet before, that work has had to be quite focused,” states Boswell. “It’s been a very good project for them to work on and stretched all of them as musicians.”
“We have worked very hard this semester in order to share with our community and campus a beautiful, musical performance in celebration of women,” states Aleah Wieland, SMWC senior criminal justice major from Marshall, Ill. “This concert is, in a way, bittersweet not only for myself, but for other graduating seniors as well, being as it is our last performance as members of the SMWC Chorale and Madrigals. I think I can speak on behalf of all the seniors when I say that we couldn’t be more proud to share our last performance with such a special group of women.”
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the SMWC director of choirs, Michael Boswell, at 812-535-5017.
