In the name of Indiana’s first saint, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) is offering two full tuition scholarships to high school seniors planning to attend SMWC in fall 2015. In addition to the full tuition scholarships, SMWC will offer five $17,000 scholarships. The scholarship is the most prestigious scholarship offered by the College to aspiring students honoring exceptional leadership and civic engagement.
The Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholarship, named after the foundress of the College, was created to recognize students who embody the principles by which Guerin lived and served.
Guerin, a woman well ahead of her time, impacted countless lives. An entrepreneurial leader who was dedicated to serving all people, regardless of race, religion or background, Guerin was passionate about educating women and preparing them to become leaders. The scholarships will be awarded to students nationwide who have used their unique experiences, aptitudes and abilities to make a difference in their local communities and beyond.
“When I first learned that I was a Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholar, I instantly burst into tears. I had wanted so badly to go to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and I knew that the only way to make that possible for me was to apply for the scholarship,” states one of last year’s recipients, Mari Bennett, psychology major, of Terre Haute, Ind. “Looking at the certificate that promised me a future at The Woods, I knew that I now had a responsibility to represent Mother Theodore and her school. Each and every day, I can feel myself growing into a strong, smart and confident woman, and it was all possible because of the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholarship.”
The process to apply includes a general application to SMWC, an essay on the topic provided and a letter of recommendation. All applications will be reviewed, and finalists will be notified in January to interview on campus.
Additional honors level scholarships will be awarded to select applicants of the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Scholarship. All of these awards are renewable for a total of four years. To be considered, prospective students should visit www.smwc.edu/smtg to apply before the December 31, 2014 deadline.
