Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College introduced its first official mascot today. The black horse Onyx made her debut as part of the Homecoming 2018 festivities.

SMWC recognizes the importance of identifying a mascot to best represent the spirit of the College. Horses symbolizes intelligence, strength and grace which is an ideal representation of excellence in competition and in the classroom.

The horse mascot is the culmination of an exploration by SMWC students. In 2017, a student committee was charged to recommend a mascot for the College to help increase school pride and spirit. The committee narrowed the field to three options, distributed a survey and held two student forums to make the final section. The students recommended a black horse. The name Onyx is a nod to the beloved SMWC ring with the Onyx stone.

“The mascot is much bigger than a visual brand for athletics,” said Dee Reed, executive director of marketing and communications at SMWC. “Onyx will serve as an outreach tool for the entire campus. In addition to cheering on the Pomeroys, she will help to establish a new tradition among students and raise awareness in the community.”

Considered an ambassador for the College, Onyx will welcome new students, attend athletic activities and various campus and community events.
