Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) has announced that it will offer an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Equine Racetrack Management to be delivered through Woods Online beginning in August. Emphasis will be placed on Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing. It is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the horse racing industry, offering students a comprehensive education in equine management combined with specialized training in racetrack operations.
Chris Warren, former director of Delta and Evangeline Downs will be the instructor for the course curriculum. With over 40 years in the racing industry, Chris will bring a wealth of knowledge to the classroom and provide interactive online courses.
Janet Clark, Ph.D., provost/executive vice president for academic affairs, is excited about the new program. “Our Equine Department continues to think about the needs of the equine industry and develop programs for students to help meet those needs. The racetrack management degree is another opportunity for students interested in equine to foster their passion here at SMWC.”
Edward Ferguson, Ph.D., chair of the Equine Department, recognizes the need for developing a program that would help prepare students for opportunities at equine racetracks. “The equine industry continues to grow and that includes growth at equine racetracks. There are several tracks within a couple of hours of us here at SMWC.”
Designed to provide students with a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the Equine Racetrack Management A.S. degree program equips graduates with the expertise needed to excel in various roles within the racing industry, including racetrack management, event coordination, facility maintenance and more. Students will gain a deep understanding of the distinct characteristics, training methods and management practices. The classes are delivered through Woods Online, the second oldest distance learning program in the nation, giving students the flexibility to do classwork around a busy schedule. Student internships will allow for experience and hands-on training, giving students an advantage once they receive their degree.
Ferguson added, “The program has been designed and will be taught by experienced professionals with extensive backgrounds in the horse racing industry. This real-world perspective will allow students to benefit from the insights and guidance from those actively involved in racetrack management.”
Warren added, “Students will gain a good understanding of how the racing office operates at the racetrack, and also receive an in-depth overview of the whole racing operation from the perspective viewpoint of a former racing executive.”
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is the only institution in Indiana and one of just 20 in the nation that offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Equine Studies. In the past year, SMWC has added a Master of Science in Equine Science and a Bachelor of Science in Equine Pre-Vet, as well as minors in Breeding Management and Equine Therapeutic Riding.
