With a twist on “Romeo and Juliet,” Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) is producing a play that explores how the story could have ended. Five leading women from Shakespeare’s plays arrive in the Capulet garden to give Juliet some advice. In fair Cecilian Auditorium we lay our scene of “When Shakespeare’s Ladies Meet.”
This 30-minute show features a small ensemble of Woods students. The show will be livestreamed on Friday, April 16 and Saturday, April 17 at 7 p.m.
Written by Charles George and directed by Karen Crispin, theatre director at SMWC, this production features star-crossed lover Juliet, played by Kaci Jones. Portia from “The Merchant of Venice,” played by Abbie Roberts, Katherine from “The Taming of the Shrew,” played by Allee Taylor, Desdemona from “Othello,” played by Carmela D’Agostino, Ophelia from “Hamlet,” played by Autumn Wilson and Cleopatra from “Anthony and Cleopatra,” played by Lea Pache, all join Juliet in her garden and share their experiences with love.
Cripsin said the small cast helped make this play possible. “Luckily, we have all remained healthy, so rehearsals have gone very well,” she said.
Assisting with the production is technical director Anthony Dinkel. Tiffani Nunn is the student assistant on scene.

“Compared to the plays that these characters are from, this show is lighthearted,” Crispin said. This show is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service.
