For the 13th year, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) named John McIntyre, D.M.A., associate professor of music at Saint Mary-of-the Woods College as the recipient of the ASCAPlus Award. ASCAP is an association of more than 390,000 composers, songwriters, lyricists, and music publishers of all types of music. ASCAPlus Awards are determined annually by a panel of distinguished music experts who judge original music for non-broadcast purposes with a prestige value.
“After thirteen years it is still an honor to have a professional group of people looking at and judging my work,” said McIntyre.
McIntyre composed original music for the Saint Mary-of-the Woods College fall play, The House of Bernarda Alba. This type of uncompensated work qualified for the symphonic/concert category. Pieces this category is composed for instrumental, choral, chamber, operatic, and liturgical music. McIntyre focuses on choral and instrumental pieces.
Students benefit from McIntyre’s expertise in many ways. In addition to classroom responsibilities, he guides them through their college careers and he writes pieces for them. Composing for the choir or any individual student is something McIntyre enjoys.
“It’s not that composing is easy,” he adds. “I like my music to be something someone needs—so I know when it is finished, someone will perform it.”
He received bachelor’s degree in music education from Western Washington University in 1977 and his master’s degree in music theory composition from the University of Miami in 1980. McIntyre earned his D.M.A. in church music from the University of Southern California in 1993.
McIntyre began his career at SMWC in August 2003. His wife, Patricia McIntyre, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of theology at The Woods.
